What is Dalgona Coffee?

Why is it called dalgona coffee? Soft coffee foam tastes and looks similar in color to Dalgona, a spongy Korean honeycomb toffee. Hence the name.

If you are from my generation, you know that this whipped coffee originated in Indian and we have been making it for many decades.

When I was growing up, beaten coffee, phentil hui coffee, or whipped coffee was the only way to prepare coffee.

Cold or hot, everyone made whipped coffee by whipping the Instant coffee with sugar and hot water. This whipped coffee is then mixed with milk to make frothy creamy coffee. Do you remember?

If you miss going to coffee shops due to coronavirus quarantine. You can easily make Dalgona coffee at home with this easy method. The best part is, no machines and no fancy coffee to make this one.

In this post, I am sharing with you two methods to make whipped coffee .With Blender, and without the blender.

Dalgona Coffee Ingredients and Essentials

  • Instant Coffee
  • Water
  • Chilled milk
  • Sugar
  • A whisk or hand mixer

How to Make Dalgona Coffee Foam

Basically, for this, you need a frothy airy coffee foam to top the chilled milk. To make it first I whip instant coffee with sugar and hot water. It incorporates air, and make a frothy and airy coffee concoction. This makes it super light and it floats over chilled milk.

Actually, I find this entire process of making dalgona coffee is soothing and therapeutic.

Although I now prefer to use a blender to make the foam, which requires less work. But you can make it without blender as well which takes more time.

This quantity is enough to make coffee foam for 5-6 servings. You can adjust the amount ingredients as per servings you are planning to make. The ration is 1:1:1.

For example if you are using 2teaspoons of coffee powder, use 2 teaspoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of water.

Now with a spoon or whisk start whipping it. I have tried both the methods, with hand and with blender and both are effective.

Dalgona Coffee With hand

If you are making it with hands, You need to whip it for a good 8-10 minutes using a round wire whisk to make a fluffy, frothy mix.

It requires a lot of elbow grease but in the end the reward of that chilled iced whipped coffee is totally worth it.

Dalgona Coffee With Blender

Now comes the Second Method Making Dalgona coffee with a blender. This is a super simple and most easy method. Use the hand mixer, the one which is used to make cakes and not the immersion blender.

I take a similar amount of instant coffee, sugar and hot water as mentioned above and make frothy foam easily in 1-2 minutes. This way you get those stiff coffee peaks with lesser effort.

So it is up to you which method you want to use!

Now is that effort and time worth, if you want to make a single serving of dalgona coffee? I would say it depends on you. Here's how I make a single serving of whipped coffee with Milk frother.

Whipped Coffee with Milk Frother

Dalgona Coffee Recipe - Korean Style (2)

You need to whip it a lot to incorporate air but in one post it said 4000 times but I did not count. All I can say is It takes time. Depending upon the quantity and method 2 minutes to 10 minutes.

My coffee mix is not foaming?

Either you have not whisked enough or the ratio of ingredients is off. Most often it happens due to more liquid than anything else so add the amount as per ingredients mentioned.

Can I make a big batch of foam and store it in the fridge: Yes You can make a big batch and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge. It stays good for 4-5 days.
