Remember Comic Sans? From a childhood favourite to a recurring joke in the design community, the font’s not had the best run of late. But for people living with dyslexia, its irregular quirkiness – what some might call its ‘ugliness’ – is actually its super power. That’s why Dyslexia Scotland, through Innocean, Berlin, decided to highlight the font’s ability to drive inclusion not just in design, but in society, for Dyslexia Awareness Month 2022 . ‘There’s Nothing Comic About Dyslexia’ targeted the world’s top designers with a multi-channel campaign that culminated in personalised social media messages challenging them to put Comic Sans front and centre in their work. The work even launched a brand new dyslexia-friendly typeface, Inconstant Regular.35 million media impressions, 5 million in earned media reach, and more than 15,000 downloads of Inconstant Irregular later, and the campaign was a hit. Further to that, it helped 780 million people around the world feel more included in the designs they were seeing every day –proving function and beauty don’t have to be mutually exclusive.Unlock inspiration from the world’s best creativity, only on The Work | lovethework.comThere’s Nothing Comic About Dyslexia | Dyslexia Scotland | INNOCEAN Berlin | 2023🥈 1 Silver Lion🎗️ 2 Shortlisted

Our recent collaboration with the wonderful Jodi from @ADHD-ID opened our eyes to the importance of inclusive design. With ADHD individuals, many of whom also have dyslexia, as the primary audience for her website, we realised the significance of making design choices that cater to neurodivergent needs. Before embarking on the design journey, we decided to conduct thorough research to ensure we selected appropriate fonts and to enhance our knowledge about designing for inclusivity. Inclusivity in design is a pressing and relevant topic, and in our latest blog post, we explore how thoughtful design can profoundly impact the online experience for neurodivergent audiences, helping them navigate the web with greater ease.Follow the link in our bio to learn more about how you can make your website (and general design) more accessible for neurodivergent audiences,https://lnkd.in/gUWrHPGn

Today, I watched the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) presentation ofNeela Imanifrom the last Design Thinkers in Toronto, which made me deep-dive into this reflection on my Easter holiday morning. Neela talks about the racial politics in graphic design and how central self-reflexivity is for our type of work. This self-awareness is usually not taught in schools. However, it's something that every one of us, immigrants or BIPOC individuals feel sooner or later during the years of exercising our profession.Neela said something that deeply resonated with me, and I want to share it here: "As designers, we are not just makers of things, but makers of culture."So, if we have such an influence, how can we be sure to understand the sociological differences in the world and how to apply this when designing? She replied that we should be gaining functional literacy as a means of gaining transformative literacy. For me, it's difficult to understand the deepness of this sentence. English is not my native language, so I try my best to fathom the complex meaning of such a short phrase, and this is my take: We should get more informed and try to understand our conscious or unconscious prejudices, we should have meaningful consultations with the design subject or include direct contact with the audience in the design research process, we should have a diverse team with different points of view, including minority teachers in schools, resulting on richer learning environments, or we should do our best to be intentional when doing design.Choose to accept that you don't know about something instead of assuming predefined misconceptions about the subject or targeted environment of your design, which is already a big first step, and start researching about it today! 📚 These books were recommended: - The Handbook of Tyranny by Theo Tinger;- The Politics of Design by Ruben Pater;- Extra Bold by Ellen Lupton and Jennifer Tobias;- Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paule Freire. It was a rich morning for sure. I recommend this 40 min presentation to everyone!Have you ever reflected on this when designing?

Ever made something sooo beautiful that then gets changed and shifted? 🖼️The images at the top right below visually illustrates the difference between equity and equality as drawn by Craig Froehle. It has served as a reliable visual tool to easily explain the differences between the key terms of #equality and #equity and has undergone soo many iterations to address additional #social and #behavioural concepts. The illustrator and #behaviourchange professor, Craig Froehle, details the evolution of this little graphic into many versions and variations in his Medium article at https://lnkd.in/eyc_Nxbg. A fascinating read. 🔍It is a fascinating dive into how people take a winning concept that they then adapt to their needs or situations. When Nadulpan builds #curriculum or #health frameworks, we always ensure to provide guidance to local teams on how to take our work and then contextualise it to fit their unique situation. We are ALL on board for teams to adjust our work to make it their own. 🦋I am only delighted when I travel to see local teams using our work and see different variations and versions of the originals we created. It's so beautiful.Have YOU released something or someone into the world and they adapted your original to suit their needs? How did that feel?

Communicating research in an accessible format is paramount to us at Lund University as it democratizes knowledge, fosters public engagement, and bridges the gap between academia and society. Charting a new course in academic engagement, I am trying to marry rigorous research we publish at religioninpraxis.com with the power of visualization. Our short, instructive videos will distill scholarly concepts into digestible formats, hopefully fostering greater accessibility and understanding. Reflecting on my academic journey, I often find myself drawn back to a pivotal moment that ignited my passion and propelled me towards my current path: the discovery of Photovoice. While immersed in my Photographic Project - Social Actions in Portrait, I witnessed firsthand the power of visual storytelling in advocating for and, mainly, by vulnerable communities. There, my curiosity to find a way to use the power of photography with academic knowledge was sparked. When my choices led me to Australia, I had the opportunity to delve into the realm of Public Health, where I had the privilege of encountering Photovoice—a method that resonated deeply with my desire to catalyse effective changes.Photovoice is a method that utilises photographs taken by a specific group or community to stimulate reflection on their perceptions of a particular issue. This participatory action research allows us to gain a more realistic perspective from those who need change and social justice. Through this method, individuals are not just subjects of study but active agents and collaborators in shaping their own narratives and driving solutions to their issues.Embracing Photovoice as a tool for advocacy and empowerment, I found myself at the intersection of academia and community engagement. The journey to integrate this approach into my academic pursuits has been challenging, yet each obstacle has only strengthened my resolve to harness Photovoice's transformative potential. Thus, my decision to pursue another Master's is rooted in a deep-seated commitment to leveraging Photovoice as a catalyst for positive change. By bridging theory with practice, I aspire to empower individuals and communities to articulate their experiences, advocate for their needs, and drive meaningful, sustainable improvements in health and well-being.In essence, my academic journey is a testament to the transformative power of visual storytelling and participatory research methodologies like Photovoice—a journey guided by the belief that every voice deserves to be heard and every story has the potential to spark change. The photo below shows one of my favourite moments when photographing the Projekt Ubuntu. Imagine the impact that improved reading speed and comprehension could have on a student's education and on the trajectory of their life. For us, this isn't just an idea, it's a core part of our mission. At The Readability Consortium, we believe readability is a fundamental right and are shaping the future of digital reading environments through our research. We believe that personalized formats and the application of variable typography can revolutionize the way we learn and process information. We have tested over 150 K-12 students across our format readability studies and have observed strong gains in reading speed (words read per minute) of at least 20%, and an 18% increase in reading comprehension. These findings also suggest that students have individual formatting needs that best support their reading performance.Readability Matters, a tech-for-good nonprofit devoted to readability in education, is one of our founding members.
