The Chronicle’s guide to summer resources for students living on-campus (2024)

With summer session 1 underway, Duke’s facilities have shifted to summer schedules. The Chronicle has compiled updates to resources for students living on-campus this summer.

Student health

The Student Health Center’s summer operation hours are from 8 a.m to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a 9 a.m. open on Thursdays. The center is closed daily from 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.

All students covered by health insurance and who have paid their student health fee are able to access regular health center services, including primary care, the allergy clinic, pharmacy services and lab tests. The hours and specifications for each service can be found on the Duke Student Health website.

Students can schedule same-day appointments by calling (919) 681-9355 and choosing option two. To make an advanced appointment, they can dial the same number and choose option one or schedule a visit through their Duke My Health account.

Dining

Students living on campus can pick from four available dining options. Credit, debit cards and Flex points are also accepted at all Duke Dining locations.

While dining selections are partially limited during the summer, many popular venues remain open. For example, popular Broadhead Center locations such as Il Forno, Ginger & Soy, Sazon, Sprout, Tandoor and The Devil’s Krafthouse are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The full dining schedule is available online.

Those on campus can view the updated times and changes to the bus schedule on the TransLoc app.

Bicycling, the Bull City Connector and GoPass are other alternatives for students to get around Durham and Duke’s campuses. GoPass has suspended fares until June 2024, allowing riders to board and exit the buses without payment.

Recreational facilities

Brodie Recreation Center remains closed until further notice, but Wilson Recreation Center has several open facilities and activities for students during the summer session. From May 13 to Aug. 25, Wilson will be open 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekend.

Those in the Duke community with Duke Recreation and Physical Education memberships are able to access the indoor climbing wall — open Monday through Thursday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. — as well as group fitness classes.

The Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion is operating from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m on Fridays. During the weekend, the aquatics center closes at 4 p.m., and the pool opens at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays and 9:10 a.m. on Sundays.

Red Mango will open for the summer session on July 1 and will operate until Aug. 9 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mailroom access

The Student Mailbox Center, located in the Bryan Center, maintains its regular hours during the summer. The package desk is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and mailboxes are available between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Duke Technology Center, located on the bottom floor of the University Store, has summer hours from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Library access

Duke Libraries remain available to all students — regardless of summer session enrollment — for book checkout, equipment loans and studying throughout the summer months.

Perkins and Bostock Libraries are open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Fridays, the libraries open at 8 a.m. but close at 6 p.m. They are also open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

The David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library is open Tuesday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lilly Library remains closed for renovations.
