Mississippi Pot Roast- Electric Pressure Cooker - Recipes That Crock! (15)
Made this last night in Electric Pressure Cooker using a 4lb Rump Roast. Flavor was excellent but meat was not tender and was dry. I have never had that problem before but wondered if it was because my rump roast had zero fat/marbling and maybe I should have used a different cut? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      Hi Jeff-
We haven’t tried a rump roast in the pressure cooker before, but I do believe the marbling would make a big difference in texture, flavor and moisture. I would try it again with a chuck roast and you should have a much different result. Hope that helps, Cris

If you were to have forgotten to thaw your chuck roast, can you cook it frozen? How long do you add to the recipe time? Thank you!!!

Wow! Great recipe. I added one onion cut into big chunks. When almost done, I’ll add a bag of little carrots, then a few minutes later, I’ll add some chunks of potatoes. Excellent one pot meal! Thanks!!!!!!!!

FAQs

Can I use my pressure cooker as a crock pot? ›

Press the "Slow Cook" button to select the slow cooking function. Set the cooking time and temperature. The Instant Pot has three temperature settings for slow cooking: low, medium, and high. Use the "Adjust" button to choose the temperature and then use the "+" and "-" buttons to adjust the cooking time.

Is it better to cook pot roast in pressure cooker or crock pot? ›

Some people prefer a roast that has more substance, so if you do, the Instant Pot is the winner. I have tried cooking a roast for up to 120 minutes in the Instant Pot and the texture still didn't match a slow cooker, but every 10 minutes of added pressure cooking will definitely make the meat more tender.

Why is my pot roast not tender in the pressure cooker? ›

If your roast is tough in the Instant Pot, it likely needs to be cooked longer. Chuck roast will become more tender the longer it cooks, so extra time may be needed. However, you can overcook beef in the Instant Pot, so keep an eye on it if you add extra time.

What is the difference between Instant Pot and crock pot pressure cooker? ›

There's still overlap when comparing an Instant Pot to a Crock-Pot, depending on which model you're talking about. Just remember that all Instant Pots are multi-cookers, which means they slow cook and pressure cook, and Crock-Pots are usually only slow cookers.

How long does a pressure cooker take compared to a Crockpot? ›

Generally, if your slow cooker meat, soup, or stew recipe calls for 8 hours on the low setting or about 4 hours on the high setting, it should be fully cooked in about 25 to 30 minutes in the Instant Pot.

What not to do with a pressure cooker? ›

Pressure Cooker Don'ts:
  1. Don't open the pressure cooker while cooking. ...
  2. Don't release the pressure before it's time. ...
  3. Don't overfill the pressure cooker. ...
  4. Don't add thickeners. ...
  5. Don't give up after one bad experience.

Why is my roast tough in the pressure cooker? ›

If you find that it's still tough after cooking, you'll need to cook it for another 10 to 20 minutes at high pressure – it just needs a bit longer to continue to brine and break down the connective tissue.

Why is my roast still tough after pressure cooking? ›

If it's still tough, you will need to cook it longer. The pressure cooking process breaks down tough meat, making it tender. Put the lid back on, seal the pressure cooker, and cook at high pressure for another 10 to 20 minutes.

What is the best meat to cook in a pressure cooker? ›

You can still pressure cook leaner pieces – like eye of round and top sirloin – but these work best if they've been stuffed, shredded or rolled (with other ingredients). Best cuts of beef to use: Chuck steak, Round Roast, Shoulder, Pot roast, Ribs, Brisket, Oxtail.

Can you overcook a roast in a pressure cooker? ›

Be sure to follow instructions carefully; at this speed, it's easy to overcook things in mere minutes. You may find that flavors aren't as fully developed as when tough meat simmers in a slow braise But you do save a lot of time.

How long do you cook 2 lb of meat in a pressure cooker? ›

For a whole roast: Cook on high pressure for 20 minutes per pound of meat. For small chunks: Cook on high pressure for 15 minutes per pound of meat.

Why won't my pot roast fall apart? ›

There are several reasons why this could have happened even after so much cooking. First, your choice of a rump roast could be a factor since cuts from the hind quarter are very muscular and, since muscles are the most resistant to breaking, this cut is quite stubborn when it comes to becoming tender.

Why is a pressure cooker better than a slow cooker? ›

Yes, cooking in a pressure cooker is healthy. Unlike a slow cooker, which cooks foods for a long time at a lower temperature, pressure cookers do use high heat when cooking - but not for a long time. This means that most of the nutrients won't be lost.

Can Instapot be used as a Crockpot? ›

Yes, you can use your Instant Pot as a slow cooker, but our Test Kitchen says it's not as easy as just hitting the “Slow Cook” button.

Do you seal pressure cooker for slow cooking? ›

#1 Use the Right Lid

If you do choose to just use the standard lid that is meant to seal tightly and keep all moisture in, just make sure you open the valve to “venting” so some of the moisture and steam can escape while slow cooking or you could overcook your slow cooker recipes.

Can I use my Cuisinart pressure cooker as a slow cooker? ›

SLOW COOKING

Turn the pressure limit value to 'Pressure Release' position (see figures 6 and 6a) Press menu button and select Low or High slow cook function.
