Mad Max | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Bruce McCabe Boston Globe If punk is a sensibility as well as an adjective, Mad Max is a punk movie. Its Australian setting enhances it, authenticating its futuristic aura. Apr 27, 2018 Full Review Mad Max | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Richard Corliss TIME Magazine [The] film has been consigned to the grind houses, where audiences are responding as Miller wants them to. From there Mad Max will find its way to the film schools and revival houses, where its tough-gutted intelligence may be appreciated. The editing style, the sound effects, the background score, and the shot composition are all testament to that. James Probably the best Mad Max movie in the series. The best, most developed villains in the series for sure. In fact The Toecutter is one of the best all-time villains in cinema. So great to see this classic movie on the big screen. I hope the Gateway will also show The Road Warrior too. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/25/24 Full Review William B This was one hell of a thrill ride, I'm glad I got the first three films in a collection Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review Audience Member An absolute diamond in the rough. It’s low budget and it shows. But get past that, and wow. This movie has heart, with great characters and intense scenes. It’s raw, but look at the nuance and you’ll see the brilliance of Gibson and Miller before they were icons. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Davin H as a lover of vintage cult movies and apocalyptic settings i went into mad max with high hopes, but ended up thoroughly disappointed. the few glimpses of a world on the brink of collapse that we get are intriguing, (particularly the first time we see inside the police station and find it near derelict) but those glimpses take up scarce few minutes of screen time.the rest of the film is dialogue ranging from naff to baffling, after school special tier cinematography, and stunts that are, if you will excuse the expression, very middle of the road. highlights include a long tedious holiday montage, long minutes where the star monologues about his father's shoes while his love interest tries to find a way to pass the time making different expressions (having been denied a single word of dialogue), the one time the protagonist flew off his bike after hitting absolutely nothing, and inexplicable mentions of a dramatically named character who was otherwise entirely cut from the film.the heroes were all flat and forgettable. the villains fare a little better, a fun goofy kind of dangerous with the seeds of some interesting mannerisms with their waltzing in the streets, but were devoid of any serious development, just a bunch of cheesy nicknames to get picked off one by one in the last 5 minutes. while many films of this era were genre-defining writing and ground-breaking filmmaking, this is not one of them. it does not hold up. i'm not sure it was ever good. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Audience Member A very disjointed and random movie. Surprised to see this is where the franchise began. I had no idea what the point of the film was or what the intentions of any of the characters were. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Ed R I wish I could give this movie 0 stars. Maybe because it's old/vintage now but there was nothing great about it. Just madness without a true plot. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
