I’ve always felt that September is one of the best months of the year to be in the kitchen because it’s all about transitional cooking. There are still a few weeks to enjoy the bounty of summer produce and make your favorite summer dishes one last time. And then you get to shift gears and spend the latter portion of month diving headfirst into fall baking, cozy casseroles, and steaming pots of soup. September cooking promises a little bit of everything.
At the start of the month, corn, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers are still readily available and positively delicious. Take advantage while they’re still here (and don’t forget that you can freeze corn — your future self will thank you!) with heirloom tomato salad, grilled corn with Vietnamese scallion oil, and sausage and pepper stuffed eggplant. And if you’re hosting or attending a Labor Day cookout, make this Korean corn cheese dip. It’s a surefire hit and comes together easily.
Usher in cool fall days with a zippy Mississippi pot roast, a pot of loaded vegetable soup, and a batch of sweet potato snickerdoodles (these are the ultimate fall cookie!). After returning from the apple orchard, use your haul of fruit for apple muffins or pull-apart apple honey challah.
Whether you’re in back-to-school mode or not, we all need easy dinner ideas and make-ahead lunch recipes in our back pocket. This month keep DIY crunchwraps, apple cider-glazed chicken thighs, and sheet pan mac and cheese in your dinner roster. And try marinated white beans or fall-inspired kale and quinoa salad for lunch options that will last the week.
Whether you’re not ready to let go of summer or you’re excited to dive into fall, there’s so much great cooking to be had this month — and we’ve got you covered for all of it. From panzanella and corn dip to apple cider blondies and roast chicken, these are the 30 recipes that are sure to inspire you to get in the kitchen this month.
