A typical collegiate sports list may include football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, swimming, and volleyball. Past student interest in a club or an intermural sport and the resources set aside for sports also influence what a school has to offer.

In professional and college baseball, a game is divided into nine innings. Each inning represents one half of the game, with both teams taking turns on offense and defense.

The NCAA oversees a total of 24 sports, many of which are also separated into men's and women's leagues. A typical college will offer 20 varsity sports.

The creation of these organizations set the stage for the first intercollegiate sporting event in the U.S. This event took place in 1852, when the rowing team from Yale competed against the rowing team from Harvard at Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire.

For men's sports, lacrosse, ice hockey, and baseball have the highest percentages of high school athletes receiving collegiate scholarships, and the same goes for ice hockey, lacrosse, and soccer in women's programs.

If at the end of a regulation game one team has a lead of ten (10) runs or more, the manager of the team with the least runs shall concede the victory to the opponent. NOTE: If the visiting team has a lead of fifteen (15) or ten (10) or more runs respectively, the home team must bat in its half of the inning.

In a six-inning game such as Little League Baseball and Softball, rules call for the game to end if the winning team is ahead by 15 runs after three innings played or 10 runs after four innings played by the trailing team.

In the MLB and college baseball there are no mercy rules. Play continues even if one team is as hot as the sun and the other is as cold as Fairbanks, Alaska, unless called off by game officials.

Currently, there are 362 institutions classified as Division I (including those in the process of transitioning from other divisions). An additional 203 institutions in one of the NCAA's other two divisions compete or will compete in Division I in at least one sport.

The NCAA defines a sport as “an institutionalized activity involving physical exertion with the primary purpose being competition versus other teams or individuals within a collegiate competition structure.”

Esports are not governed by the NCAA, which in spring 2019 confirmed a “hands-off” policy to collegiate gaming.
