What Cut of Pork Can You Use for this Crock Pot Pulled Pork Recipe?

The cut of pork you choose really depends on what you prefer. If you like to have a little more lean meat, then I suggest a pork loin. But, if you are wanting that stick to your ribs pulled pork experience, then a shoulder blade roast or Boston Butt is the best option.

Let’s face it, fat adds flavor and the shoulder roast has just that. You also get added flavor because the bone is in the roast while it cooks. Not to worry though, after it’s time in the crock pot, the meat will literally fall right off the bone. Making it super simple to remove.

Prepping your Roast for this Crock Pot Pulled Pork Recipe

The most important step is to rub the entire surface of the roast with this Everything Spice Rub {or a rub that you love}. I made a full recipe and used the whole thing. Flavor, flavor, flavor.

Speaking of flavor, instead of adding water as liquid, I like to add apple juice. It not only helps steam the meat but also gives it an extra flavor as it cooks while keeping the meat super tender.

I cooked this roast on high for 4 hours and then turned it down to low for an additional 2 hours {but 8 hours on low works great too}. Now I don’t think you can really over cook pulled pork this way because of the moisture is maintained. But be careful because once it becomes tender, the texture can get a little mushy. So just watch it.

I love the liners they sell next to the Ziploc bags, they sure help with clean up!!

Finishing this Crock Pot Pulled Pork Recipe

Here is a look at the roast when I removed it from the crock pot. I tried to get it out in one piece but it was so tender that it fell apart into about 4 pieces.

My favorite way to “pull” the pork, is to use these special forks. It takes a little while but before long the entire roast was shredded.

On the first night I serve it on dinner rolls with bbq sauce and a salad. Then I made Baked Pulled Pork Tacos and BBQ Pulled Pork Stuffed Mac n’ Cheese. TRIPLE YUM!

I like to freeze extra meat in Ziploc bags, making sure to get all of the air out of each bag. I also make sure to write the date and cut of meat on each bag. Sometimes when things are frozen they look the same and you play the “what am I defrosting for dinner” game. I hope you will break out the crock pot and pull some pork today!
