I just love homemade creamy mashed potatoes. But then again, who doesn’t? Creamy mashed potatoes go with everything… Fried Chicken, Turkey, Ham, you name it, and you can serve it with mashed potatoes! I guess you can call me a mashed potatoes snob, because I’m not a huge fan of instant mashed potatoes. I prefer to make my very own flavorful mashed potatoes.

Creamy Mashed Potatoes Recipe (3)

There are so many ways to make mashed potatoes. Some people make their mashed potatoes recipe with cream cheese, others make their mashed potatoes with skin, and some even make their mashed potatoes recipe with sour cream. I personally like to make mine differently, and I think I have the best mashed potatoes recipe ever!

I start off by boiling my mashed potatoes in chicken broth. Why? Because it adds so much flavor! Forget about boiling your potatoes in plain water. Step up your game, and boil them in broth – IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

Creamy Mashed Potatoes Recipe (4)

To make my mashed potatoes creamy, I add half & half ( which is half milk & half cream). The half & half does the trick, so no need for sour cream or cream cheese.

This mashed potato recipe is delicious already, but if you want, feel free to add a little bit of mozzarella for a cheesy mashed potato recipe!

These sound delish and then some. I use heavy whipping cream in mine. And that seriously kick up the flavor even more.

FAQs

Is it better to use milk or heavy cream in mashed potatoes? ›

As always, better quality ingredients equals better tasting food. Heavy Cream - While you, hypothetically, could use whole milk or something, I don't recommend it. Part of what makes these the creamiest mashed potatoes is the CREAM!

Why add butter before milk in mashed potatoes? ›

Adding the butter first helps to coat the starch in the potato, resulting in a creamier potato. Once the butter is absorbed; add the rest of the dairy.

What happens if you add too much milk to mashed potatoes? ›

Runny potatoes can happen for a few different reasons. Too much liquid: This is the most common reason. In the mashing process you may have added too much milk or broth. Boiled too long: Boiling your potatoes for too long can make them water-logged, which (you guessed it) can contribute to runny mashed potatoes.

What's better in mashed potatoes, sour cream or cream cheese? ›

Sour Cream: The sour cream helps keep the mashed potatoes fluffy. Cream Cheese: This adds a bit of creaminess without being too overpowering.

Do you put warm or cold cream in mashed potatoes? ›

For the very best result every time, always gently warm the butter and milk before adding to the potatoes, rather than adding cold dairy straight from the fridge. Here's why: Warm dairy is absorbed faster and more easily, with less stirring than its cold counterpart.

What happens if you use milk instead of heavy cream? ›

You can use whole milk or opt for skim milk to help slash the calories and fat content of your recipe. This substitute is especially useful in cooking, but it may alter the texture of baked goods and will not whip as well as heavy cream.

Why are my mashed potatoes not creamy? ›

You could be using the wrong potatoes. Potatoes are generally considered "waxy" or "starchy." Waxy potatoes (like white potatoes and red potatoes) are more prone to gumminess when mashed, as opposed to starchy potatoes (like Yukon Golds and russets). Choose starchy potatoes or a mixture of waxy and starchy potatoes.

Should you let potatoes cool before mashing? ›

Always start cooking potatoes in cold water and mash them while still warm.

Is it bad to over boil potatoes for mashed potatoes? ›

Tip #3: Don't Overcook or Undercook the Potatoes

If you overcook them they disintegrate and your potatoes will be soupy. The specific cooking time depends on the size of your potato: a perfectly cooked piece of potato should give no resistance when cut with a knife, but shouldn't crumble into a million pieces.

What is the trick to thicken mashed potatoes? ›

You can use what you have on hand: Flour, cornstarch, or powdered milk are all solid options that are probably already in your pantry. Potato flour and potato starch would work as well. Stir in the thickening agent gradually, about a tablespoon at a time, until the potatoes have reached your desired consistency.

Why can't you add flour to mashed potatoes? ›

Regular flour can also be used to thicken your potatoes as well, but I don't love using it because its raw flavor needs to be cooked out, and it more noticeably dulls the flavor of the potatoes themselves.

Why do restaurant mashed potatoes taste better? ›

Instead of regular milk, pro chefs generally use a generous helping of buttermilk and plenty of half-and-half or (even better) heavy cream in their potatoes. If you think the bartenders up front are pouring heavy, they've got nothing on the cooks in the back who are in charge of the mashed potatoes.

Is milk or heavy whipping cream better in mashed potatoes? ›

The best Creamy Mashed Potatoes consists of perfectly cooked russet potatoes, melted butter, heavy cream and a touch of tartness like crème fraîche.

Which is better heavy whipping cream or milk? ›

Whole milk is a good choice for general cooking and baking, as it adds richness and flavor without being too heavy. Heavy cream and heavy whipping cream are best for recipes that require a thick and creamy texture, or for making whipped cream.

How do you make mashed potatoes not sticky creamy? ›

Throwing in a cold stick of butter and a splash of milk straight from the refrigerator will immediately cool down some of the spuds, which will prevent a creamy, smooth mash. If you take the time to slowly heat milk or heavy cream and butter in a small saucepan on the stove, you'll have much better results.

Can I use heavy cream instead of milk for instant potatoes? ›

Add Heft with Dairy

Heavy cream can make instant mashed potatoes taste indulgent. Half and half or even regular milk (whole is better than skim, but 2% will do) adds extra creaminess. To give your mashed potatoes a light tanginess, go with buttermilk or sour cream.
